Abstract

The Speaker Professor Arjan K. Shahani received his Bachelors degree in Mathematics and Physics from University of Bombay (1956), Masters in Operational Research from University of Birmingham (1963), and Ph.D. in Operational Research from University of Southampton (1978). He has worked as a Statistician with Philips, London (1956–1963), at the Bristol College of Technology/Bath University (1964–1967), and as a full-time faculty since 1967 at the University of Southampton. Professor Shahani is well-known for his contributions to the field of Operational Research as applied to health care management. Dr. Shahani's interest in health work developed around 1980. He was instrumental in setting up the Institute of Modelling for Healthcare within the Mathematics Department, University of Southampton in 1987. He retired from full-time formal university work in 1998, and set up the Health Data Analysis and Modelling Group in the GeoData Institute, University of Southampton. He has guided numerous Ph.D. and M.Sc. students in the field, continues to work in this field, and collaborates with many health professionals and health organisations in UK, Austria, Brazil, and India. He is currently on a visit to the K.E.M. Hospital, Pune.
