Abstract Initial part of this informal talk will be an introduction to grid computing. I will then present a perspective of the usefulness of grid computing to different kinds of scientific problems, and tell about experiences on setting up and using the Finnish national grid called M-grid. Finally, I will give some examples of grids whose main focus is not on high performance computing but rather on facilitating data access and collaboration between organizations.
The Speaker Mr. Arto Teras has a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology. He got involved with grid computing in summer of 2000 during his studies there. He joined CSC, The Finnish IT Center for Science as a grid specialist in October 2003. During his three years at CSC. Mr. Teras worked as the coordinator of the M-grid, a Finnish national computing grid consisting of ten Linux clusters. He also participated in the technical teams of Northern European NorduGrid and EU-funded DEISA project, which focuses on interconnecting large scale supercomputers located at different centers in Europe. Currently Mr. Teras is taking some time off for his favourite hobby, traveling.
