Abstract Many statistical techniques have been used to study the performance of players in cricket. In this talk, we exhibit the use of principal component analysis for ranking the batsmen as well as bowlers. Data from Indian Premier League matches is used to develop this model. Further, we also demonstrate the use of statistical quality control (SQC) techniques to examine if a player's form has improved or worsened. This may be helpful in selection of players. We study the performance of World Cup probables (for India and England) using the SQC techniques.
