This Science Day (28/2/2018), CMS-SPPU takes on two contemporary issues and questions the veracity of various claims. Two prominent figures will engage the audience in the interactive sessions as they spell out verifiable modern and ancient wisdom. 12:00--13:00 | Why Evolution Is Important

Public statements such as "Nobody, including our ancestors, in written or oral, have said they saw an ape turning into a man" naturally make lay people wonder about Evolution. What is Science? What is Theory of Evolution? Why is it considered so fundamental? A former politician who defended science and evolution in the recent controversy explains why he considers the theory of evolution and scientific temper important for the society. This will be followed by open discussion.
Mr. Pradeep Rawat is the founder/director of Rawat's Nature Academy, which hosts more than 5000 books on science and beyond. He was a Member of Parliament in the 13th Lok Sabha.

What is Science? What are Vedas? Can the two words be put together in a meaningful way? After opening remarks by Professor Zysk and a few examples from the Vedic context which might suggest a Scientific spirit of enquiry, there will be an open exploratory discussion. This session is jointly organized with the Department of Pali and Buddist Studies, SPPU.
Prof. Kenneth Zysk is a Professor at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen, currently visiting the Department of Pali and Buddist Studies, SPPU. He has worked extensively on cross-cultural aspects of Indian medicine.
