Abstract | Diffusion is an old subject which got started about two hundred years ago with Brown's pioneering experiment on what is now called the Brownian motion. We will begin with Einstein's elucidation of Brownian motion (1905) in which he combined ideas of chemical engineering, thermodynamics and basic stochastic processes. We will then stress on the myriad applications of Diffusion in various branches of science, such as defect solid state physics, spectroscopy, pattern formation, and even to quantum dissipation. |
