Abstract |
While still in high school I decided to pursue ecology because of my fascination
with the natural world . But other aspects of science, in particular its
insistence on sound logic attracted me . This implied that science was not a
mere collection of facts as much of natural history tends to be, but of making
observations to test some particular hypothesis. I did my doctoral work at a
time when computers were just beginning to be applied in science, posing the
problem of allocation of limited resources by living organisms towards
maintenance, growth and reproduction using techniques of industrial engineering.
One of my predictions was that the level of allocation of resources to
reproduction will be higher in organisms facing higher levels of density
independent mortality. I proceeded to validate this hypothesis through
ecological field work. I have continued to pursue such an approach through all
my work, including some very applied ecological work that followed.
